January 2009: Important changes to the Ukrainian immigration rules: Strict Control over Foreigners' Stay in Ukraine to be Introduced Kyiv, 14 January 2009: New electronic entry and exit control database tracking all violations relating to the foreigners' stay rules in Ukraine started to operate in December 2008. According to the applicable Ukraininan legislation foreign nationals may stay in Ukraine without registration with the Department of Citizenship, Immigration and Registration of Individuals up to 90 or 180 days depending upon the legal basis used by an individuals to enter and stay in Ukraine, e.g. based on a specific type of visa or non-visa entry, etc. An individual violating the rules of stay in Ukraine is subject to a penalty in the amount from UAH680 to UAH3,400 and/or may be restricted from entering Ukraine for the period of 5 years. According to the Rules of Entering Ukraine by Foreign Nationals the company inviting the foreigner will be yearly examined by the Immigration Department. In case of a violation of the rules of foreign nationals' employment and registration with the Immigration Department is detected by the Immigration Department, penalty in the amount of up to UAH3,400 will be imposed on the intiviting company. Who needs a visa Citizens of all countries apart from those that have a visa-free agreement with Ukraine or citizens of countries that can travel to Ukraine as tourists without a visa thanks to the unilateral agreement valid since July 2005 (see Important notice above). It is a good idea to choose at least the double entry option if you're staying for more than 3 months. Your visa can be prolonged once you're in Ukraine, but you cannot change the type. Visas cost from 50 euros for 3 month private single entry visa and increase from there, the one year multiple entry business visa will cost you around 150 euros. Applying for a visa Applying for a visa is possible at your nearest embassy or consulate of Ukraine. Fill in the application form, attach your invitation, 2 passport photos, your passport and the consular fee. The standard time for obtaining a visa is 5 working days. You can NOT obtain a visa in Ukraine! Application Form in PDF Prolonging your visa/expired visa You can prolong your visa at the Central OVIR office located on Bereznyakivska 4a. You can only extend the visa as the same type and it will always only be valid for one exit from Ukraine. The process takes about 4 to 5 days and you should apply only about 5 days before your visa expires. The cost is approximately 30 Hryvnas and be prepared there may be queues at the office.
